A Time of New Departure, of Decline – or a Glorious Future? One Hundred Years of Public Libraries in Germany

On the basis of the five functions of public libraries: information, education, culture, reading, and forum, the paper demonstrates how they have been put into practice in Germany in the past 100 years, and what roll they are playing at present. It summarizes the current targets in the metaphor of the "House": public library means House for the future, House for the municipality, House for knowledge, House for education, House for culture, House for integration, House for families and generations, House for participation, and House for service.
