OpenDOAR : the directory of open access repositories

Autor: University of Nottingham (Author) ; Lund University (Author) Schlagwörter: digital repositories ; institutional repositories ; subject repositories ; open access Inhalt: OpenDOAR is a directory of academic open access repositories. Each repository listed in OpenDOAR has been visited, virtually, by project staff to check the information that information is accurate and quality-controlled. The directory can be searched or browsed by a range of criteria, such as subject area, country, content type or software type. Institutional and subject-based repositories make up the majority, but the directory also encompasses archives set up by funding agencies ...

DRIVER has a clear vision: All research institutions in Europe and worldwide make all their research publications openly accessible through institutional repositories. The vision follows the Berlin Declaration, which called in October 2003 for ‘free and unrestricted access to sciences and human knowledge representation worldwide’. Initiated by the internationally renowned German research organisation the Max-Planck-Society, and signed by many international research organisations and institutes, the Berlin Declaration has set a political statement. In building a sustainable infrastructure for scientific repositories, DRIVER brings to this statement the reality of scholarly communication in the future.

Libraries have traditionally been central providers of research information infrastructure. What is changing and needs to change in the digital age? Librarians need to facilitate effective access to the whole range of information available on the Web. Library information systems await further technical and functional development, and search engines will play a central role. Libraries must collaborate with partners from the grid and e-science communities, as well as with commercial partners. The role of the librarian will become that of a developer, provider or agent. In order to facilitate the academic process, libraries must carefully observe the needs of their users, whether that involves information discovery, information management and processing, or scholarly communication and publication. Will Google, Yahoo and Microsoft become the only avenues for accessing the world of knowledge in the year 2010? The author of this article makes the case for concerted action on the part of libraries which would lead to the creation of dependable, highquality search services for academic information for research and teaching via state-of-the-art search engine technology. The need for such a service has arisen from the numerical explosion of scientifically relevant documents that are often accessible only through the internet, but not (or not adequately) researchable through libraries’ information portals. This article describes the possibilities for libraries and other information providers to cooperate in a national and international context in order to construct an open, shared academic internet index which can be used in any local environment in modular format. It is noted that a user-friendly design of the new system will need to take into account the current, general internet search machines, which have achieved a high level of popularity and user acceptance within quite a short period of time. Zusammenfassung:

This article is the revised and elaborated version of a presentation that was delivered at the invitation of the American Digital Library Federation (DLF) at their Spring Forum meeting in New Orleans (http://www.diglib.org/forums/Spring2004/springforum04abs.htm). It will be followed by "Search engine technology and digital libraries: Moving from theory to praxis" as a collaborative article from this author and Friedrich Summann, Head of IT at Bielefeld University Library. With the development of the World Wide Web, the "information search" has grown to be a significant business sector of a global, competitive and commercial market. Powerful players have entered this market, such as commercial internet search engines, information portals, multinational publishers and online content integrators. Will Google, Yahoo or Microsoft be the only portals to global knowledge in 2010? If libraries do not want to become marginalized in a key area of their traditional services, they need to acknowledge the challenges that come with the globalisation of scholarly information, the existence and further growth of the academic internet.
