Werden Google, Yahoo und Microsoft die einzigen Zugänge zum weltweiten Wissen im Jahre 2010 darstellen? Der Autor setzt sich für eine konzertierte Aktion der Bibliotheken ein, um mittels »State-of-the-Art«-Suchmaschinentechnologie verlässliche, qualitativ hochwertige Suchdienste für wissenschaftliche Informationen in Forschung und Lehre aufzubauen. Die Notwendigkeit ergibt sich aus dem explosionsartigen Anwachsen wissenschaftlich relevanter Dokumente, die nicht selten ausschließlich über das Internet zugänglich sind und über derzeit verfügbare Informationsportale von Bibliotheken nicht oder nur sehr unzulänglich recherchiert werden können. Der Artikel beschreibt mögliche Wege der Kooperationen von Bibliotheken und anderen Informationsanbietern im nationalen und internationalen Kontext beim Aufbau eines offenen, verteilten wissenschaftlichen Internet-Indexes, der modular angelegt in beliebigen lokalen Umgebungen genutzt werden kann. Für die nutzerfreundliche Gestaltung des neuen Suchservices wird auf die Notwendigkeit der Berücksichtigung von etablierten, allgemeinen Internet-Suchdiensten eingegangen, die innerhalb kurzer Zeit eine hohe Popularität und Nutzerakzeptanz gewonnen haben. The author of this article makes the case for concerted action on the part of libraries which would lead to the creation of dependable, highquality search services for academic information for research and teaching via state-of-the-art search engine technology. The need for such a service has arisen from the numerical explosion of scientifically relevant documents that are often accessible only through the internet, but not (or not adequately) researchable through libraries’ information portals. This article describes the possibilities for libraries and other information providers to cooperate in a national and international context in order to construct an open, shared academic internet index which can be used in any local environment in modular format. It is noted that a user-friendly design of the new system will need to take into account the current, general internet search machines, which have achieved a high level of popularity and user acceptance within quite a short period of time. DRIVER has a clear vision: All research institutions in Europe and worldwide make all their research publications openly accessible through institutional repositories. The vision follows the Berlin Declaration, which called in October 2003 for ‘free and unrestricted access to sciences and human knowledge representation worldwide’. Initiated by the internationally renowned German research organisation the Max-Planck-Society, and signed by many international research organisations and institutes, the Berlin Declaration has set a political statement. In building a sustainable infrastructure for scientific repositories, DRIVER brings to this statement the reality of scholarly communication in the future. Zusammenfassung:

Bibliotheken sind traditionell die Säulen der Infrastruktur für die Bereitstellung wissenschaftlicher Literatur. Was wird und muss sich für Bibliotheken im digitalen Zeitalter ändern? Bibliotheken müssen konsequent alle wissenschaftlich relevanten Informationsquellen erschließen, die über das Internet zugänglich sind. Bibliothekarische Services sind technologisch und funktionell weiterzuentwickeln, Suchmaschinen werden dabei eine zentrale Rolle spielen. Bibliotheken müssen mit Partnern aus Grid-/ und e- Science-Communities kooperieren, ebenso wie mit kommerziellen Anbietern. Bibliotheken können Service-Entwickler, -Anbieter und -Agentur sein. Zukunftsfähige Informations-Dienste erfordern eine konsequente Orientierung an den Bedürfnissen der Nutzer, in allen Bereichen der Informationsgewinnung, Informationsverwaltung, Informationsweiterbearbeitung, wissenschaftlichen Kommunikation und Publikation. This article is the revised and elaborated version of a presentation that was delivered at the invitation of the American Digital Library Federation (DLF) at their Spring Forum meeting in New Orleans (http://www.diglib.org/forums/Spring2004/springforum04abs.htm). It will be followed by "Search engine technology and digital libraries: Moving from theory to praxis" as a collaborative article from this author and Friedrich Summann, Head of IT at Bielefeld University Library. With the development of the World Wide Web, the "information search" has grown to be a significant business sector of a global, competitive and commercial market. Powerful players have entered this market, such as commercial internet search engines, information portals, multinational publishers and online content integrators. Will Google, Yahoo or Microsoft be the only portals to global knowledge in 2010? If libraries do not want to become marginalized in a key area of their traditional services, they need to acknowledge the challenges that come with the globalisation of scholarly information, the existence and further growth of the academic internet.
