Für die neue Online-Ausstellung "Reading Europe: European Culture through the book" haben die Nationalbibliotheken Europas jeweils etwa 100 bedeutende Werke ihres Landes digitalisiert und in die Europeana eingebracht. Deutschlands Beitrag zu "Reading Europe" sind digitalisierte Ausgaben von bekannten literarischen Werken deutscher Autoren aus verschiedenen Jahrhunderten. Digitalisiert wurden Druckausgaben aus dem Bestand der Bibliothek, unter strikter Wahrung der Urheberrechte, nicht nur der Autoren, sondern auch der Beiträger wie Illustratoren oder Verfasser von Vorworten. "Reading Europe" bietet rund 1.000 Werke in 32 Sprachen. Die Ausstellung zeigt beispielsweise die Erstausgabe von "Don Quixote" in Spanisch, Goethes "Faust" in Deutsch oder Dostojewskis "Der Idiot" in Russisch.

International UDC Seminar 2009
CLASSIFICATION AT A CROSSROADS - MULTIPLE DIRECTIONS TO USABILITY
The Hague, 29-30 October 2009
Following the success of the first International Seminar on UDC in 2007, this the second in a series of biennial conferences is entitled "Classification at a Crossroads: Multiple Directions to Usability" and will take place on 29-30 October 2009 in the UDC headquarters at the Koninklijke Bibliotheek in The Hague.
The 2009 Seminar aims to explore how new developments in information standards and technology influence and affect applications and services using classification, Universal Decimal Classification in particular, and its relationships to other systems.
The conference programme will highlight many ways in which classification use can be improved. Attention will be paid to the applications of classification schemes, UDC in particular, in supporting multilingual access, user-friendly representations of classification in resource discovery and semantic searching expansion and classification application across distributed systems.

Contributions will be reviewed by the Programme Committee consisting of an international panel of experts. All papers will be made available in an open e-print archive and linked to from the UDCC website. Selected papers will be published in the "Extensions and Corrections to the UDC", 31 (2009).

ORGANIZER: The seminar is organized by the UDC Consortium (UDCC) and hosted by The National library of The Netherlands. UDCC is a non-profit organization, based in The Hague, established to maintain and distribute the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) and supports its use and development. Today, the UDC is used at least in 125 countries. In 34 countries in Europe, Asia and Africa, it is the main classification system used across national library and information networks.

Proceedings
Paper abstracts, presentation slides, handouts and recordings are now available on the conference programme page.
Conference proceedings will be published as an annex to the Extensions and Corrections to the UDC (ISSN 0014-5424), 31 (2009) and will subsequently be deposited in the dLIST open access archive for Information Sciences.
A selection of papers from the conference will also be published in volume 37 of the Knowledge Organization journal (ISSN 0943-7444), the official quarterly journal of the International Society for Knowledge Organization.

3. EDUG-Symposium. 28. April 2009 in der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek in Wien
Einführende Vorträge zur Dewey-Dezimalklassifikation und zur European Dewey Users Group sowie Erfahrungsberichte von DDC-AnwenderInnen in verschiedenen europäischen Ländern bieten interessante Informationen auch für DDC-AnfängerInnen, Berichte über Übersetzungsmodelle, Mapping-Projekte oder Internet-Anwendungen geben einen umfassenden Überblick über aktuelle und potentielle Entwicklungen und Anwendungen der DDC. Auch für Fragen und Diskussionen mit den einzelnen ExpertInnen wird genügend Raum sein.
Zum Symposium werden BibliothekarInnen und Bibliothekare aus über zehn Staaten Europas sowie VertreterInnen von OCLC aus den USA erwartet. Die Konferenzsprache ist Englisch.

DDC-Notationen aus WorldCat in SWB-Titeln ergänzt Für die aus der WorldCat-Einspielung der SWB-Daten in 2009 zurückgelieferten DDC-Notationen, erfolgte Ende Juni bis Anfang Juli 2010 der Nachtrag in der SWB-Datenbank. Dabei wurde geprüft, ob die entsprechende Notation schon in dem Titelsatz vorhanden war. War dies der Fall, so wurde keine Ergänzung vorgenommen. Von den ca. 2.16 Mill. aus WorldCat gelieferten DDC-Notationen wurden 1.44 Mill. Notationen in den SWB-Titeldaten ergänzt.
