The DOI^® Handbook (Version 4.4.1, released 5 October 2006) is the primary source of information about the DOI^® System. It discusses the components and operation of the system, and provides a central point of reference for technical information. The Handbook is updated regularly. The main chapters <http://www.doi.org/handbook_2000/toc.html> of the Handbook give a complete explanation of the DOI System. The Handbook moves from an overview, through an explanation of each of the components of the system, to detail on how applications are built and the operation of the system through IDF and its Registration Agencies. The Appendices <http://www.doi.org/handbook_2000/toc.html#app1> provide detailed technical documentation and supporting information which is not necessary for most users. An Adobe^® Acrobat^® version of the Handbook (doi:10.1000/186 <http://dx.doi.org/10.1000/186>) is available and recommended for printing. Comments about the Handbook are welcome and should be sent to Dr. Norman Paskin at contact@doi.org.
