The German copyist and printer, Erhard Ratdolt, worked for a decade in Venice, beginning in the year 1476. He printed a number of editions that were notable for their remarkable beauty and precision, as well as for a series of significant innovations in the craft.

Ratdolt was responsible for the first title page, the use of an innovative design of geometric diagrams, the two-colour printing of astronomical illustrations, as well as the frequent use of frames and woodcut initials on a black background. A true artist in the field of typography, Erhard Ratdolt was likely the first specialized printer of scientific texts!
