Chapter 1: Resilient health systems: Responding to pandemics and beyond
 +
 +
This chapter focuses on one of the most immediate policy issues posed by Covid-19 - the health sector. It starts by providing an overview of some of the main weaknesses of health systems exposed by the Covid-19 pandemic. In light of such challenges, the chapter also discusses the main lessons of the pandemic by putting forward some key policy proposals to strengthen health systems and make them more resilient. Special focus is given here to the critical issue of health workers who constitute the backbone of health systems critical to achieving universal health care .
 +
 +
Chapter 2: Income support and social protection for all workers
 +
 +
in this chapter, the emphasis is on another immediate policy issue, that of income and social protection. The chapter starts with a discussion on the root causes to income insecurity and weak social protection, which were only exacerbated by the Covid-19 crisis. This is followed by a discussion on the situation of two major groups of workers – self-employed informal workers and (formal and informal) workers in global supply chains - as well as existing and potential policy responses to address the dire situation of these workers. The chapter also provides an overview of the policy measures for income replacement in the South. This is combined with a discussion on the importance of avoiding a wage decline and of increasing wages for essential workers. The chapter concludes by highlighting the need for a gender perspective in the debate about strengthening income security and social protection.
 +
 +
Chapter 3: Securing emergency funding and financing recovery
 +
 +
This chapter looks at the main challenges facing the countries during the pandemic. it then discusses the role of international financial institutions and international cooperation to increase the financial space in the Global South. This discussion is complemented with a debate on debt cancellation for sustainable development as well as possible policy measures by the countries in the South which strengthen the policy space to respond to the pandemic. Finally, the case of South Africa is used to illustrate some of the these challenges and policy measures.
 +
 +
Chapter 4: Redirecting the economy towards a socially and environmentally sustainable future
 +
 +
Having discussed the immediate policy responses to the Covid-19 crisis, the concluding chapter of this course discusses the way forward. The chapter emphasises the importance of reorienting the economy based on a logic of care and infrastructure provision for basic human needs and rights. The example of the transport industry is used to illustrate the challenges facing the process of reorientating the economy, as well as the implications in terms of policies and strategies at all levels. Clearly, such a shift requires exploring options for long-term financing for both developing and developed countries. It also requires building coalitions for change and strengthening solidarity across the progressive forces within and across countries.

Tibet’s Secret Temple exhibition

presented an astonishing overview of Tantric Buddhist art, showing many rarely seen images, sculptures and manuscripts from museums, institutions and private collections.

When we heard that no catalogue would be printed for this exhibition, we decided to film it as one of our Art Heritage Interviews.

We thus interviewed Ian Baker, the lead curator of the exhibition, about the story of the murals of the Lukhang temple in Lhasa, and about this fascinating time of Asian Art history.

We followed him around the exhibition, unveiling, through a precise and comprehensive presentation of its major artworks, the main characters, concepts, historical moments and legendary stories of this barely known practice of Buddhism.

This 1h15 minutes long free-to-watch-and-share documentary can also be watched part per part ( see the 16 episodes on Art Heritage Interviews or www.artvideolibrary.net )

#vBIB20 - 26.-28. Mai 2020

Jonathan Franzen=== WANN HÖREN WIR AUF, UNS ETWAS VORZUMACHEN?

GESTEHEN WIR UNS EIN, DASS WIR DIE KLIMAKATASTROPHE NICHT VERHINDERN KÖNNEN.

Rowohlt.

As global communities respond to the COVID-19 pandemic

, there has been an increasing emphasis on public health strategies, like social distancing measures, to slow the rate of transmission. In Google Maps, we use aggregated, anonymized data showing how busy certain types of places are—helping identify when a local business tends to be the most crowded. We have heard from public health officials that this same type of aggregated, anonymized data could be helpful as they make critical decisions to combat COVID-19.

Starting today we’re publishing an early release of our COVID-19 Community Mobility Reports to provide insights into what has changed in response to work from home, shelter in place, and other policies aimed at flattening the curve of this pandemic. These reports have been developed to be helpful while adhering to our stringent privacy protocols and policies.

The reports use aggregated, anonymized data to chart movement trends over time by geography, across different high-level categories of places such as retail and recreation, groceries and pharmacies, parks, transit stations, workplaces, and residential. We’ll show trends over several weeks, with the most recent information representing 48-to-72 hours prior. While we display a percentage point increase or decrease in visits, we do not share the absolute number of visits. To protect people’s privacy, no personally identifiable information, like an individual’s location, contacts or movement, is made available at any point.

We will release these reports globally, initially covering 131 countries. Given the urgent need for this information, where possible we will also provide insights at the regional level. In the coming weeks, we will work to add additional countries and regions to ensure these reports remain helpful to public health officials across the globe looking to protect people from the spread of COVID-19.

"COVID-19 and the related government-led lockdowns have resulted in widespread economic shock and job loss

, in the UK and around the world. Governments, including in low and middle-income countries, have responded with economic interventions to cushion the shock. The most widely-used government tool has been cash transfer programmes: the World Bank finds 234 measures involving expanding cash transfer programmes worldwide, as well as 100 food or voucher schemes. In the past, some governments have been concerned that transfers would increase dependency on the state and, in particular, that cash transfers would not be used well because it is hard to monitor how people spend them. Many governments used instead to provide food aid or subsidise basic food items. So why have governments shifted to using cash in low and middle-income countries?

In most situations, there is strong evidence that money, not food, is the most efficient and effective way to distribute emergency aid and social programmes."

02 March 2020 COVID-19 (Coronavirus disease 2019) Guest post by Julianne Beall

We hope you are not yet trying to classify books about COVID-19! Why? Because we are not yet sure where to recommend that you class them.

Remember SARS? When we indexed "Severe acute respiratory syndrome—medicine" to 616.2 Diseases of respiratory system, we were following MeSH (Medical Subject Headings). The MeSH heading Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome has Respiratory Tract Infections as the immediate broader term in the MeSH tree structure.

MeSH has not established a heading for COVID-19, but it has established a MeSH Supplementary Concept record. COVID-19 is mapped to Pneumonia, Viral. If the heading, when it is established, has Pneumonia, Viral as the immediate broader heading, we will index COVID-19 (Disease)—medicine to 616.241 Pneumonia.

The 616 number can be added at various places in the 610s and elsewhere, e.g., interdisciplinary number and social services number for respiratory tract diseases 362.1962, interdisciplinary number and social services number for pneumonia 362.196241; incidence of and public measures to prevent respiratory tract diseases 614.592, incidence of and public measures to prevent pneumonia 614.59241.

Stay tuned!

Course structure and content

Chapter 1: Resilient health systems: Responding to pandemics and beyond

This chapter focuses on one of the most immediate policy issues posed by Covid-19 - the health sector. It starts by providing an overview of some of the main weaknesses of health systems exposed by the Covid-19 pandemic. In light of such challenges, the chapter also discusses the main lessons of the pandemic by putting forward some key policy proposals to strengthen health systems and make them more resilient. Special focus is given here to the critical issue of health workers who constitute the backbone of health systems critical to achieving universal health care .

Chapter 2: Income support and social protection for all workers

in this chapter, the emphasis is on another immediate policy issue, that of income and social protection.

Chapter 3: Securing emergency funding and financing recovery

This chapter looks at the main challenges facing the countries during the pandemic. it then discusses the role of international financial institutions and international cooperation to increase the financial space in the Global South. This discussion is complemented with a debate on debt cancellation for sustainable development as well as possible policy measures by the countries in the South which strengthen the policy space to respond to the pandemic. Finally, the case of South Africa is used to illustrate some of the these challenges and policy measures.

Chapter 4: Redirecting the economy towards a socially and environmentally sustainable future
