intro digital-humanities

As primary sources of information are more frequently digitized and available online than ever before, how can we use those sources to ask new questions? How did Chinese families organize themselves and their landscapes in China’s past? How did African slaves from different cultures form communities in the Americas? What influences informed the creation and evolution of Broadway musicals? How can I understand or interpret 1,000 books all at once? How can I create a visualization that my students can interact with? The answers to these questions can be explored using a wide variety of digital tools, methods, and sources.

As museums, libraries, archives and other institutions have digitized collections and artifacts, new tools and standards have been developed that turn those materials into machine-readable data. Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI), for example, have enabled humanities researchers to process vast amounts of textual data. However, these advances are not limited just to text. Sound, images, and video have all been subject to these new forms of research. This course will show you how to manage the many aspects of digital humanities research and scholarship. Whether you are a student or scholar, librarian or archivist, museum curator or public historian — or just plain curious — this course will help you bring your area of study or interest to new life using digital tools.

“Intelligence has nothing whatsoever to do with thought.” ~ Jiddu Krishnamurti

“True intelligence does not derive from thought. True intelligence uses thought. Thoughts in your head are really no different than the sound of a bird outside. It is just that you decide that they are more or less relevant. Thoughts are just moving through consciousness. They have no power. Nothing has reality until you reach it, grab it, and somehow impregnate it with the power of belief.” ~ Adyashanti

“No thought has any power. You have power. And when you identify and believe in the thought, you give power to the thought. We are the space in which thoughts appear, play, and dissolve like clouds drifting in the infinite sky.” ~ Mooji

"We’re sitting under the tree of our thinking minds, wondering why we’re not getting any sunshine!" ~ Ram Dass

“Look past your thoughts, so you may drink the pure nectar of this moment.” ~ Rumi

“Under the obsessive thoughts and emotions, positive and negative, there is an ocean of peace.” ~ Gangaji

"If you don't refer to a thought or memory, do you have any experience of suffering? See thoughts and feelings like a train that enters a station and then leaves; be like the station, not like a passenger." ~ Rupert Spira

“Leave your front door and your back door open. Let thoughts come and go. Just don't serve them tea.” ~ Shunryu Suzuki

“When a thought hurts, that’s the signal that it isn’t true. Reality is always kinder than your thinking.” ~ Byron Katie

“There is a region beyond thoughts. Unless you get there, you will not know the sweetness of love, nor the Divine. Once your mind becomes absolutely still, your intelligence transcends human limitations.” ~ Sadhguru

“If you are absolutely without thoughts, just pure consciousness, time stops completely, disappears, leaving no trace behind. Mind is your prison, no-mind is your freedom. Mind is your ignorance, no-mind is your enlightenment. Move from mind to no-mind. This is the whole path. In the space of no-mind, truth descends like light.” ~ Osho

“I think 99 times and find nothing. I stop thinking, swim in silence, and the truth comes to me.” ~ Albert Einstein

“Thinking is only a small aspect of consciousness. Thought cannot exist without consciousness, but consciousness does not need thought. The primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation but your thoughts about it. The human condition: lost in thought. Thinking without awareness is the main dilemma of our existence. Thinking is compulsive: you can’t stop, or so it seems. It is also addictive: you don’t even want to stop, at least not until the suffering generated by the continuous mental noise becomes unbearable. Observe your thoughts, don’t take them too seriously. Spiritual awakening is awakening from the dream of thought. Being must be felt. It can’t be thought.” ~ Eckhart Tolle

“Don't think. Feel. It is like a finger pointing at the moon. Do not concentrate on the finger, or you will miss all of the heavenly glory. The primary reality is not that I think, but that I live, for those also live who do not think.” ~ Bruce Lee

“We are completely unaware of our true nature because we identify ourselves with our body, our emotions and our thoughts, thus losing sight of our unchanging centre, which is pure consciousness. You are primal awareness. Life is only primal awareness. Between two thoughts or two perceptions you are. You know moments in your life when a thought completely disappears into silence, but still you are.” ~ Jean Klein

"We are taught since childhood to identify ourselves as thinkers and to always be thinking about something, so we miss the fact that who we truly are is the awareness from which the thoughts originate." ~ Enza Vita

"After knowing Eckhart Tolle for a while and studying the books, I woke up and suddenly got it. I understood suddenly how thought is just illusory, and that thought is responsible for most, if not all of the suffering we experience. And then I suddenly felt like I was looking at thoughts from another perspective, and I wondered, who is it that is aware that 'I' am thinking? And suddenly I was thrown into this expansive amazing feeling of freedom – from myself, from my problems. I saw that I am bigger than what I do, bigger than my body. I am everything and everyone. I am no longer a fragment of the universe. I am the universe." ~ Jim Carrey

"The only burden you have ever had is your mind. The problems are in the thoughts. The only way to get rid of your problems is to quiet your mind, go within, and realize the Self. When the mind is quiet, you shine in all your glory." ~ Robert Adams

“All your problems are just thoughts. And thoughts are not a problem. Just as the ocean allows every wave, Awareness allows every thought and feeling.” ~ Jeff Foster

“The ocean doesn't complain about the dance of ten million waves; so don't be concerned with the rise and fall of thoughts. Let the mind sleep; you stay awake. When the mind is quiet, all is the Self.” ~ Papaji

"Don't believe your thoughts. 'I am the body' is a thought. 'I am the mind' is a thought. 'I am the doer' is a thought. Worry is only a thought. Fear is only a thought. Death is only a thought. When all thoughts are stilled, Pure Consciousness remains over. To bring about peace means to be free from thoughts and to abide as Pure Consciousness. The thoughts change but not you. Let go the passing thoughts and hold on to the unchanging Self." ~ Ramana Maharshi

East vs West

There is a problem with Christians, Muslims, Jews, who think of God as a person -- there is a problem. They think God is the one who created the world. In the East we have a deeper understanding of God than that. Creation is not something separate from God: it is His play; it is He Himself hiding in many forms. Here He has become a rock, there He has become a flower. Here He is a sinner and there He is a saint. The whole play is His. And He is the only actor and He goes on dividing His roles. He is in Jesus and He is in Judas. In the East, God is not a person -- God is the very stuff the universe is made of. God is not a creator -- God is creativity. And the creator and the creation are just two aspects of the same creative energy.

OSHO ‘No Lower, No Higher’

Simplicity simply means living moment to moment spontaneously, not according to some philosophy, not according to Jainism, Buddhism, Hinduism, not according to any philosophy. Whenever you live according to a philosophy you have betrayed yourself, you are an enemy to yourself. Simplicity means to be in a deep friendship with oneself, to live your life with no idea interfering.

It needs guts, certainly, because you will be living constantly in insecurity. The man who lives with ideals is secure. He is predictable; that is his security. He knows what he is going to do tomorrow. He knows, if a certain situation arises, this is the way he will react to it. He is always certain. The man who is simple knows nothing about tomorrow, knows nothing about the next moment, because he is not going to act out of his past. He will respond out of his present awareness.
