52 ANDRADA, Francisco d'.

Classic in the field of Portuguese discoveries, settlements and sea-borne empire Cronica do muyto alto e muito poderoso Rey destes Reynos de Portugal dom Ioao o III. deste nome.

Lisbon, Jorge Rodriguez for the author & Francesco Lopez livreiro, 1613. Folio. Contemporary vellum over boards, spine with four raised bands and two (later) red morocco labels lettered in gold, blind fillets and stamped centre-piece on both sides. Title in ornamental woodcut border with a vignette of the coat of arms of Portugal, many charming woodcut initials. (19), 113, 134, 131, 155 lvs.

Rare first edition of the official chronicle of the reign of King Joao III of Portugal (1502-1557) who ruled Portugal from 1521 till his death in 1557, being the last decades of the Portuguese Golden Age. His reign is marked by the introduction and establishment of the inquisition in Portugal from 1536 onwards and by entrusting the monopoly on education to the Jesuits. The period is also characterized by the many expeditions to the Far East, especially Macao and Japan, and the colonisation of Brasil. The chronicle, as most of the contemporary chronicles, very much stresses these international developments over sea, neglecting more or less the internal affairs of Portugal itself, also considering the ubiquitous Inquisition, as always alert for printed actual accounts, especially those printed in the vulgar. Most chapters are devoted to the Portuguese activities in Asia - India, China, Malacco, Ceylon, etc. - , Africa - Mozambique, Zanzibar, Ethiopia, Ormuz, Suez, Tanger, etc. - and Brasil, a.o. to the founding of Salvador (Bahia).Azevedo and Borba de Moreas call for 20 preliminary lvs., the copies found described (BL, BN-Paris, BN-Lisbon, Harvard Univ., PL-New York and Newberry Libr., Chicago) all have 19 lvs. as also in our copy. After the title follows a preface (1 lv.), privileges (1 lv.) and 16 lvs. with contents of the four parts in which the work is divided: part 1: fol. 1-113; part 2: fol. 1-134; part 3: fol. 1-131 and part 4: fol. 1-155.D'Andrada (ca. 1536-1614) was the brother of the famous mystical writer Frei Thomede Jesus. Francesco also wrote a well-known epical poem on the decisive sea battle in the waters of Diu in the Indian Ocean in 1538 - Primeiro cerco de Diu - which can be esteemed as a poetical appendix to this chronicle of the reign of Joao III, which itself is considered as a masterpiece of historiography and as a classic of Portuguese literature in general. Very good copy with a blind stamped ex-libris of Antonio de Almeide Correa on the title and a gilt bookplate of the Huth Library pasted to the inner side of the front cover.- (Insignificant little hole in the outer margin of six lvs.; ties missing). 379 VELLOZO, J. M. da CONCEICAO.

Florae Fluminensis Icones. 1827 Parisis, ex off. Lithogr. Senefelder, curante F.J. Knecht, 1827. 10 of 11 volumes (lacking volume 3). Large-folio (520 x 345mm). With 1472 (of 1640) lithographed plates, first volumes with some staining and foxing, a few plates more severely browned. Contemporary half calf, spines with 5 raised bands, gilt lettering. First and only edition of the rarest botanical iconography of Brasilian plants. Our copy lacks volume 3 with 168 plates, complete copies have 11 vols with 1640 plates. The publishing history of the present work is probably the most bizarre one in the history of botany. Jose Vellozo was born in Minas Geraes in 1742 and lived in Rio de Janeiro. Encouraged by the Viceroy, Luiz de Vasconcelos, he devoted 25 years to studying and collecting Brazilian plants. In 1790 he travelled to Lisbon with the intention of submitting for publication his 'Flora', containing descriptions of 1640 species accompanied by 1700 drawings, made by Friar Francisco Solano and Antonio Alvares. In 1792 the Portuguese government approved publication and the drawings were sent to Venice to be engraved. 554 plates had been engraved in Venice when the French invaded Portugal. The Portuguese government fled to Brazil and Vellozo returned to his monastery in Rio de Janeiro, where he died in 1811, leaving his manuscripts to the Royal Library. There they were rediscovered by Friar Antonio de Arrabida and Emperor Pedro I commissioned the work to be published. The plates were sent to the famous lithographers Senefelder in Paris. Emperor Pedro I commissioned an edition of 3000 copies of the above work, an edition which was very much criticized by F.J. Knecht, the successor of Senefelder, and various Parisian scientists as being excessively high. However the Brazilian government persisted. When printing was nearly ready the Brazilian government cancelled the printing order, due to political circumstances which led to the abdication of Emperor Pedro I. The work was however finished by Knecht and sent to Brazil, filling the cellars of a government department. The Brazilian government never paid the full printing costs and only very few copies were distributed. Some sources indicate that only 40 copies were distributed and the plates were finally sold to a paper factory. The present copy has the rare 'Index methodicus iconum', however lacks pp. 1-4 of the 'Table alphabetique'. A printing history of the work by the publisher precedes the 'Index', of which Junk made a reprint in 1929. Of the text which was to be printed in Rio de Janeiro only a small volume appeared in 1829; the complete text was not published until 1881. Provenance: Name of P. Olivier on foot of spines. Stafleu and Cowan 16000; Nissen BBI 2046; Barba de Moraes p 902; Brasilien-Bibliothek der Robert Bosch GMBH 379.

411 - POEPPIG, E.

Reise in Chile, Peru und auf dem Amazonenstrome während der Jahre 1827-1832. 1835 Leipzig, F. Fleischer & J.C. Hinrichssche Buchhandlung, 1835-1836. 2 text volumes & atlas. 4to (268 x 220mm, text vols) & oblong-folio (480 x 650mm, atlas). pp. xviii, 466; pp. viii, 464, with 16 large lithographed plates. Contemporary boards (a bit worn). Famous and beautifully illustrated South American expedition. "After his visiting Chile and Peru Poeppig journeyed down the Amazon river to Para. Part of his scientific collection was lost but he managed to save an enormous quantity. The account of the expedition and the botanical surveys he published are comparable to the work of Humboldt" (Barba de Moraes). The fine large plates are by Joseph Anton Sedlmayr, Joh. Nepomuk Ott and Ignaz Bergmann after drawings by Poeppig. The two text vols have considerable foxing and occasional waterstaining, and do not contain the folded map as well as the sheet of music (lacking in most copies). The atlas volume is very fine showing charming South American sceneries. Barba de Moraes p. 681; Sabin 63 629; Robert Bosch 411.

450 CASTELNAU, (Francis de).

Beautiful account of the most important scientific expedition to South America in the 19th century Expedition dans les parties centrales de l'Amerique du Sud, de Rio de Janeiro a Lima, et de Lima au Para; executee par ordre du gouvernement Francais pendant les annees 1843 a 1847. [nach diesem Titel suchen] Paris, P. Bertrand, 1850-1857. 7 parts in 15 vols. 7 vols. in 4to, 6 vols. in 8vo and 2 vols. folio. Later half red morocco, spine ribbed and gilt. 493 lithographed plates and maps, in black, in two colours or fully coloured, 401 coloured by hand.

Original edition of the most important scientific travel to South-America in the 19th century. Count Francis of Castelnau (1810-1880) started his scientific expedition in 1843. On board of a French war-ship he sailed to Rio the Janeiro. He and is men crossed South-America from Rio de Janeiro via Minas Geraes, Goias and Mato Grosso. After exploring the north of Mato Grosso and the Paraguay River until Asuncion they continued their journey from Vila Bela to Bolivia via Potosi. After a stay in La Paz they travelled to Lima. From there they explored the source of the Amazon and finally they sailed to Para where their journey ended. During these travels they gathered an enormous and various amount of information from their meteorological, magnetic, botanical and zoological observations, which were almost lost when one of the expedition-members was killed by Indians during which his records and most of the astronomical and barometrical observations were destroyed. Fortunately his minutes were saved and with a lot of extra effort the history of this expedition was completed. The scientific results of this expedition are of considerable importance. Besides the zoological, botanical, mineralogical and ethnographical collections he brought to Europe, De Castelnau provided a wealth of information with the astronomical, barometrical, hydrographical and hydraulic observations and determinations he made. Not only the scientific importance makes this a much sought after work; the beautiful coloured plates make it a desired work for bibliophiles as well. Series and plates are composed as follows:- Histoire du voyage, six 8vo vols, with 60 plates of which some are coloured;- Vues et scenes recueillies pendant l'expedition..., 4to with 76 double-page, coloured plates;- Antiquites des Incas, 4to with 60 numbered (1-62) plates of which some are coloured, (nrs 19 and 28 were never published.);- Itineraires et coupes, folio, 76 double-page, coloured plates;- Geographie, folio with 30 double-page, coloured maps;- Botanique, two 4to vols. with 90 numbered plates;- Zoologie, 3 4to vols: 1): Anatomie with coloured frontispiece and 17 plates; Mammiferes, 20 plates of which 12 are coloured; Oiseaux, 20 coloured plates; 2): Poissons, 50 coloured plates; Reptiles, 18 coloured plates; 3): Entomologie, 20 coloured plates; Mollusques, 22 coloured plates; Myriapodes et scorpions, 8 plates. Very fine, complete set. Howgego, Encyclopedia of exploration 1800 to 1850, C14; Borba de Moraes I, 167-168; Bosch 450; Nissen, Zool., 88-89; Sabin 11411.

GENDRIN, Victor-Athanase. Presentation copy by the author with the 9 extra lithographed plates Recit historique, exact et sincere, par mer et par terre, de quatre voyages faits au Bresil, au Chili, dans les Cordilleres des Andes, a Mendoza, dans le Desert, et a Buenos-Aires. [nach diesem Titel suchen] Versailles, Gendrin, auteur-editeur, 1856 (bound 1858). 8vo. Contemporary green morocco, spine gilt with title lettered in gold, gilt dedication "Offert par V.-A. Gendrin a la Bibliotheque de la ville de Cahors 1858" on front cover and gilt ornamental vignette on back cover, blind tooled borders on sides. With lithographed portrait of the author, "fait la veille de son depart pour le Bresil en 1816, D'apres le croquis de Mr Heim, membre de l'Institut", signed 'Lith. Hayet', 1 map of South-America composed according to indications of the author by Lith. Hayet and 8 lithographed plates of events and places of the voyages. Together with the added 15 pp. with lithographed preface by the author, extracts from the reviews of the book and 13 letters of acknowledgement by different receivers of a presentation copy. (12), XX, 571 pp.

First edition of this valuable report on 7 voyages made in South-America by the French merchant Victor-Athanase Gendrin (b. 1793). This copy was presented in 1858 by the author to the Bibliotheque de Cahors. The book tells of the life and business of a small shopkeeper in Rio de Janeiro and of a travelling salesman in Chile and Argentina. It is divided into 3 parts devoted to 7 voyages: to Brazil, to Chile, to the Cap-Horn, to the 'Cordilleres des Andes', to Mendoza, to the desert and to Buenos Aires. It contains details of the country and the daily life of a shopkeeper during the first years of the 19th century, and therefore constitutes an important document on the conditions of French salesmen in South America. It is "the only book about the lives in Brazil of the small French traders, the 'pacotilleurs'" [Borba de Moraes]. Gendrin travelled to Rio de Janeiro in 1816, where he started a shop in which he sold snuff, snuff-boxes, mirrors, brushes, watches, china and other small articles. His business went very well, but he decided to try his luck in Valparaiso, Chile. He also started a business in Santiago, where he experienced the earthquake of 1822. Subsequently, he crossed the Andes to reach Buenos Aires and returned to France in 1823. He had earned enough money to profit from it for the rest of his life. The half-title reads: "Le Passe-temps ou L'Industriel devenu commercant. Ouvrage inedit". As the book was published by the author himself, the edition was probably small, and copies are not easy to find. Good copy.- (One hinge weak, water stain in half-title, some slightly browning and foxing at places).

- Borba de Moraes I, 56; Sabin 2471; Kat. d. Brasilien-Slg. R. Bosch, 492. - Vereinzelt etwas fleckig, sehr gutes Exemplar.

It is one of the best German works of the time, and very important for the study of colonization and the system of "parceria" in Sao Paulo. - Borba de M., I, 56; Sabin 2471; Kat. d. Brasilien-Slg. R. Bosch, 492. - Some scattered spotting. A good copy.

WAWRA VON FERNSEE, H. Botanische Ergebnisse der Reise seiner Majestät des Kaisers von Mexico, Maximilian I. nach Brasilien. 1866 Wien 1866. Folio (495 x 345 mm). pp. (4), xvi, 234, (4), with 104 plates of which 32 are chromo-lithographed. Contemporary calf, spine with 3 raised bands, gilt lines and lettering, frontcovers with gilt and blind pressed ornaments and lettering. A superbly produced work on the flora of Brazil. Wawra, Ritter von Fernsee was marine-surgeon and accompanied Maximilian I to Brazil in 1859-1960 on the 'Elisabeth' . The publication is an important and valuable contribution to the flora of Brazil, describing many new species. The plants were collected by the gardener Franz Maly. The publication of the work was postponed because Wawra accompanied Maximilian to Mexico in 1864 where the latter was to become Emperor. In 1865 Wawra resumed his work and was assisted by Martius, August von Kremelhuber and Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach. The plates are by J. Seboth and lithographed by Hartinger & Sohn in Vienna. Especially the chromo-lithographed plates are of a very high quality. A fine copy. Brasilien-Bibliothek der Robert Bosch GMBH, 529; Barba de Moraes I, p. 937.

548 Keller-Leuzinger, Franz:

The Amazon and Madeira Rivers. Sketches and descriptions from the note book of an explorer. London 1874 (ADB 51, 106ff). Bosch 548; Moraes 433.
