		+	In an article explaining how he came become a socialist, he wrote: "the consciousness of revolution stirring amidst our hateful modern society prevented me, luckier than many others of artistic perceptions, from crystallising into a mere railer against 'progress' on the one hand, and on the other from wasting time and energy in any of the numerous schemes by which the quasi-artistic of the middle classes hope to make art grow when it has no longer any root, and thus I became a practical Socialist."

		+	Approximately thirty-four items comprising correspondence, catalogues, announcements, and other items complementary to the efforts of the Kelmscott Press and Morris & Company. Most the correspondence is to Pickford Waller, collector, designer, and member of the Aesthetic Movement. Waller's interest in Morris is duly revealed: the letters communicate the offerings of various book dealers, and several include price lists. Booksellers represented include The Chaucer's Head Library, Jones & Evans, Frank Hollings, and A. Lionel Isaacs, and several of their catalogues are also present in the archive. Other articles pay homage to Morris directly, including a chapbook printing of Morris's "Under an Elm-Tree," published by James Leatham of Aberdeen in 1891. Another highlight, evincing the longevity of Morris's influence, is a presentation copy of
		+	"The Ideal Book, A Paper by William Morris Read before the Bibliographical Society,"
		+	published by the Central School of Arts & Crafts in 1957.
		+	The copy, which boasts a splendid orange initial M as half-title, is inscribed by C. H. Briggs, Honorary Secretary, to Douglas Cockerell and Son. Still other items attend to Morris's (and Morris & Co's) forays into decorative arts, including stained glass, wallpapers, and general interior design. Notes of foxing and rubbing to some items, else a near fine view into the daily affairs and historical importance of Morris, his books, and his businesses.

As a critic of capitalism, his thinking has thrived in these years of financial crisis; as a theorist of work and craftsmanship, his legacy interacts with a more recent ethics of making that questions the values of 'off-shored' production; and as a protector of landscape and buildings Morris's concern with what is precious strikes a chord in our age of environmental crisis. At the same time, a careful and scholarly approach observes the particularity of Morris's context, in a way that confounds the 'false friends' of hasty historical reception and reveals unexpected connections.
