Juli 1914 in Frankfurt am Main geboren. Bereits 1931 trat er dem Kommunistischen Jugendverband Deutschlands (KJVD) bei und wurde früh politisiert. In den folgenden Jahren engagierte er sich in der Arbeiterjugend und im antifaschistischen Widerstand – und gehörte damit zu denen, die die Gefahr des Nationalsozialismus früh erkannten und ihr aktiv entgegentraten.</ins></div></td></tr>

Es folgten elf Jahre Gefängnis und Konzentrationslager, darunter Dachau und Buchenwald. Auch dort blieb er Teil des organisierten Widerstands und beteiligte sich 1945 an der Selbstbefreiung des Lagers.</ins></div></td></tr>
