		+	, written shortly before his death fleeing Nazi persecution, offers a fragmented but incisive critique of the idea of historical progress that underpinned both bourgeois liberalism and orthodox Marxism. Central to the text is his image of the Angel of History, drawn from a Paul Klee painting, an angel propelled backward into the future while staring at the past, seeing not a chain of progressive events but a single catastrophe piling wreckage upon wreckage at its feet, unable to stop and mend what has been destroyed. Benjamin uses this image to reject the notion of history as a smooth, cumulative march toward emancipation, insisting instead that what is called progress is a storm blowing from Paradise that we mistake for advancement. He argues that historicism, the dominant mode of historical writing, empathizes with the victors and narrates history as their inevitable triumph, thereby erasing the suffering and defeated struggles of the oppressed whose sacrifices made that triumph possible. Against this, Benjamin proposes a materialist historian's task: to "brush history against the grain," recovering the discontinuous, repressed memories of the vanquished rather than reinforcing the victors' seamless narrative. Central to this method is his concept of "Jetztzeit," or "now-time," a revolutionary, messianic instant that can rupture the homogeneous, empty continuum of chronological time, allowing the past's unresolved claims to erupt into present political action. Benjamin's theses thus refuse both naive faith in historical inevitability and detached contemplation of the past, insisting that genuine historical materialism must be oriented toward redeeming the defeated and seizing revolutionary possibility in moments of present crisis.
