Library Science in Mexico is a discipline at crisis. On one hand, in the search for integration into the information society its Study Program changes towards a more administrative and technical model of education; on the other hand, as our introductory example shows, the lack of a humanistic education for librarians, is leaving them in a very unethical position since they do not have what is needed to understand the political and social relevance of knowledge production and transmission. A positivist perspective of reality has invaded classrooms, conferences, publications and research. There is no critical or theoretical thinking in Mexican librarianship at all nowadays and this determines an apathetic and passive performance from librarians, especially in public libraries since these public spaces are open to the social, economical and political characteristics of the place they were built on. More over, the mission of public libraries as social change agents does not accomplish due to the fact that they are not offering any objective alternative to mass media standardization of public opinion. And as TV and media-based democracy spreads throughout the whole country, librarians seem oblivious to this situation. It is because of this, that we believe it is necessary for librarians to get a theoretical and humanistic education while they are in school in order to be prepared and committed with their social role.

Library catalogs allow library patrons

to identify whether or not a given library has a book they are interested in and where the book is located. By linking in to Book Search, users can check to see whether a book they want to browse actually contains content relevant to their question or investigation. This can save substantial time especially when researching obscure topics. We've received many stories from librarians about how their users find books on Book Search but do their actual research using physical copies of books from their local library.

Europe's digital archive, library and museum Conference: Users Expect the Interoperable

The Hague, 23/24 June 2008

A conference focusing on interoperability in museums, archives and libraries.

User expectations make interoperability a necessity. The technical solutions are now available to make that interoperability a reality, and the conference will focus on opportunities, solutions, and practical examples in museums and archives.

The conference also features the first preview of Europeana Prototype1 This will be the first opportunity to see a working version of the site. This preview is only being shown to conference delegates.

There will be a session to comment on the prototype, giving delegates the chance to influence development of Europeana.eu. The feedback from the conference will drive the design and functionality of the public prototype which will launch in November 2008.

The conference is now open for booking. Attendance at the conference is free.

Members of the Europeana/EDLnet partnership will have their travel and expenses covered for one delegate.

Der Kanzler und seine Bücher

Einblick in die Sammlung des Fürsten Hardenberg

Der preußische Reformer und Staatskanzler, Karl August Fürst von Hardenberg (1750-1822), hinterließ eine wertvolle Bibliothek. Die Sammelschwerpunkte der Bibliothek spiegeln nicht nur die politische Tätigkeit Hardenbergs, sondern geben auch Aufschluss über seine vielfältigen Interessen. Nach einer wechselvollen Geschichte gelangte die Bibliothek Hardenbergs vor zwei Jahren in die Zentral- und Landesbibliothek Berlin. Erstmals wird die Sammlung nun in einer Ausstellung präsentiert. Die wertvollen Exponate können im Foyer der Bibliothek bewundert werden.

Am Freitag, 10. November, Luthers Geburtstag, hat die Herzog August Bibliothek den von Maria von Katte erstellten elektronischen Katalog der Wolfenbütteler Lutherdrucke 1513 bis 1546 unter der zitierfähigen Adresse http://diglib.hab.de/edoc/ed000007/start.htm frei geschaltet.

Er enthält die Beschreibung von 6.000 Drucken Martin Luthers und eröffnet damit der Forschung, insbesondere der Kunstgeschichte und der Theologie, neue Zugänge zu der weltweit größten Sammlung von Schriften Luthers, die zu Lebzeiten des Autors bis 1546 erschienen sind. Neben der sorgfältigen Beschreibung bietet der Katalog in zweifacher Hinsicht Neues. Erstens sind sämtliche Illustrationen, sowohl auf den Titelblättern als auch im Text, abgebildet und beschrieben. Zweitens sind alle 950 genannten sowie die anonymen Vorbesitzer von nicht schätzbarer Zahl persönlich und nach dem Inhalt ihrer Eintragungen in dem Katalog erfasst. Darunter sind bekannte Personen aus Luthers Umfeld, z.B. Nikolaus von Amsdorff, Andreas Karlstadt oder Johannes Bugenhagen, aber auch Leser aus den verschiedenartigsten Lebensbereichen, also Schuster und Schneider, deren Namen bisher nicht bekannt waren.

Der Katalog erlaubt vielfältige Suchen in normalisierten Indices. Ausgaben können nach den Kriterien Titel, Drucker, Jahr, Ort, bibliographische Nummer (Weimarer Ausgabe, Benzing, VD 16), Provenienzen nach Vorbesitzern und Illustrationen im Volltext der Bildbeschreibungen gesucht werden. Das Portal wird ergänzt durch erläuternde Texte zur Sammlung, zur Entstehung des Kataloges und Methodik der Erfassung sowie einer Auswahl der wichtigsten Literatur.

Eine Gruppe LIS-StudentInnen hat in [1] einem Kurs bei Michael Stephens zahlreiche [2] Libraries that Wiki entdeckt und beschrieben. Dabei wird die Vielfalt der bibliothekarischen Wikis deutlich. Zu unterscheiden sind demzufolge:

• Staff Intranet (vgl. beispielsweise unsere Hinweise [3] hier und [4] hier)
• Wiki as Website (vgl. unseren Hinweis [5] hier)
• Subject Guides
• Special Programs
• Professional Knowledgebase (in Deutschland vor allem [6] BüchereiWiki und [7] BID-Portal der Wikipedia).

Die Abgrenzungen sind natürlich unscharf, und auch über die Vollständigkeit ließe sich diskutieren. Wo gehören z.B. Angela Killes “[8] Wikis (that) Help Manage Knowledge in Library Reference Services” hin (vgl. unseren Hinweis [9] hier)? Viele Anwendungsbereiche von Wikis für BibliothekarInnen führte übrigens auch das Panel “[10] Wikis: Enabling Library Knowledgebases” der diesjährigen Wikimania-Konferenz vor Augen bzw. [11] vor Ohren.

Zur Erforschung mittelalterlicher Bibliotheksbestände [Trier]

Workshop in der Stadtbibliothek Trier, veranstaltet vom "Historisch-Kulturwissenschaftlichen Forschungszentrum Mainz-Trier (HKFZ)". Das Thema "Zur Erforschung mittelalterlicher Bibliotheksbestände" knüpft an an den ersten HKFZ-Bibliotheksworkshop "Rekonstruktion und Erschließung mittelalterlicher Bibliotheken: Neue Formen der Handschriftenerschließung und der Handschriftenpräsentation" und erweitert die Thematik, indem nunmehr die Erforschung von Bibliotheksbeständen stärker in den Blick genommen wird.
