OCLC cloud

In the book, the authors explain how the new Web is a growing "cloud" of interconnected resources === that identify the people, places, things and concepts that people want to know about when they approach the Internet with an information need. They also explain why linked data is an appropriate architecture for the description of library resources in the new Web. Modeling data in a form that the broader Web understands may raise the visibility of libraries where searches for information are now most likely to start. This is the context for describing OCLC's contributions to the linked data cloud, which have produced data models and RDF datasets for several of the oldest, largest, and most widely referenced resources published by the library community, including WorldCat, WorldCat Works, VIAF, FAST, and the Dewey Decimal Classification. They are encoded in Schema.org, the vocabulary endorsed by the world's major search engines for indexes and structured displays. Library Linked Data in the Cloud: OCLC's Experiments with New Models of Resource Description will be beneficial to librarians, archivists, computer scientists, and other professionals interested in modeling bibliographic descriptions as linked data. It is available in libraries, in print from Amazon and a variety of other retailers, and also as an eBook from Morgan and Claypool. See the Library Linked Data in the Cloud webinar recording (featured above) or OCLC news release for more information about the book. For more information about OCLC’s linked data efforts, see the OCLC Linked Data Research project page. http://www.oclc.org/research/publications/2015/oclcresearch-library-linked-data-in-the-cloud.html

Harper,Michelle harperm at oclc.org

On behalf of OCLC, I'd like to provide some clarification on the OAIster discussions that have been happening lately. Please see Roy Tennant's recent post: Clarification on OCLC/OAIster Transfer <http://hangingtogether.org/?p=739>

September 23rd, 2009 by Roy

Earlier in the week I posted "The Straight Dope on OAIster" <http://hangingtogether.org/?p=738> in an effort to bring the OAI community up to date on the transition of this service from the University of Michigan to OCLC, and our intentions for it going forward. A comment on that post, as well as chatter via Twitter and on some mailing lists has prompted us to clarify the terms and conditions to make it absolutely clear that they only apply to the harvested metadata.

It was never our intent to harvest anything other than metadata. Unfortunately, the terminology used in the OAIster terms and conditions did not accurately state the rights that OCLC needs to make the OAIster data available. As a result, the OAIster terms and conditions have been corrected and are being re-sent to OAIster data providers.

We are sorry for causing a misunderstanding. Our intent has always been to simply transition the good work of the University of Michigan to our infrastructure and support. We will strive to be more accurate and clear in the future so as not to distract us all from the important work of maintaining and expanding access to open access content.

This post may be found in its entirety at http://hangingtogether.org/?p=739
