Anne of Green Gables (1908) by Lucy Maud Montgomery, illustrated by M. A. and W. A. J. Claus Chapter I → Related Portalsrelated portals: Children's literature Sister Projectssister projects: Wikipedia article, quotes, Wikidata item Written for all ages, it has been considered a children's novel since the mid-twentieth century. It recounts the adventures of Anne Shirley, an 11-year-old orphan girl who is mistakenly sent to Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, a middle-aged brother and sister who had intended to adopt a boy to help them on their farm in Prince Edward Island. The novel has been translated into 20 languages, and adapted as film, made-for-television movies, and animated and live-action television series. While Mark Twain in a letter to Francis Wilson praised it for "the dearest and most moving and delightful child since the immortal Alice;" some critics have commented on some striking parallels in the book to Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, (1903), a children's book by Kate Douglas Wiggin.
