What is ISNI?

ISNI (International Standard Name Identifier) is an ISO standard, in use by numerous libraries, publishers, databases, and rights management organizations around the world. It is used to uniquely identify persons and organizations involved in creative activities, as well as public personas of both, such as pseudonyms, stage names, record labels or publishing imprints. As an open standard, ISNI is not a proprietary "walled garden" - it is diffused widely on the open web, and is a critical component in Linked Data and Semantic Web applications.

The ISNI database is populated from many data sources worldwide, and based on linking through matching algorithms. ISNI identifiers ("ISNIs") are assigned when there is a high level of confidence in matching new names to existing names in the database or when sufficiently rich metadata is available to determine that the new name does not yet exist in the ISNI database.

ISNI Press Release, August 2024: MVB partners with ISNI and DNB to enhance author identification and streamline book marketing 2024-08-26

Renowned technology and information provider launches new cross-sector ISNI registration service

The ISNI International Agency (ISNI-IA) is thrilled to announce that MVB has radically extended the range of ISNI-related facilities that it supports, including the introduction of a cross-sector assignment service available globally via its new online platform, which is poised to significantly improve the clarity and efficiency of author identification in the German-speaking book market.

Collaboration with the German National Library

In a significant advance, MVB has teamed up with the German National Library (DNB) to enhance the accuracy of author identification. This collaboration has already led to the unambiguous identification of over 700,000 authors in the German Books in Print Database, Verzeichnis Lieferbarer Bücher (VLB). By integrating data from the German National Bibliography and the Common Norm File (GND), these authors have been registered in the ISNI database, ensuring their public names are uniquely identifiable within the international book supply chain. MVB is now providing VLB publishers with detailed lists of their assignments for verification and further processing.

Publishers are encouraged to:

• Verify automated assignments of works • Report correct, existing ISNI information to the VLB • Register new ISNIs as necessary

Detailed video instructions on these steps are available in German, here. Additional information can be found on the VLB help pages and MVB’s ISNI FAQ.

Additionally, MVB is actively engaging in detailed discussions with the collection management organisation, VG WORT to potentially extend their cooperation, aiming to simplify attribution to streamline the distribution of royalties.

Voices from the Industry

Monica Wellmann, Head of the business unit Digital at MVB, emphasises the importance of clear assignments in the digital business world:

"For ISNI to reach its full potential, widespread adoption is essential. Our partnership with DNB is crucial in supporting publishers in this vital work. We have provided ISNIs for all identifiable authors in the VLB and are making this information available to VLB publishers at no cost."

Christiane Behnert, Category Manager Product Metadata at Hugendubel Digital, highlights the practical benefits:

"With ISNI, we can accurately identify authors, regardless of name variations, and distinguish between different people with similar names. This enhances data quality for services like author profiles and 'follow' functions. We are grateful for the intensive groundwork laid by MVB and DNB, and encourage publishers to now take action swiftly."

New Online Service

MVB has launched a new online service to facilitate further ISNI registrations (with a nominal fee charged per successful registration), and offering a platform for free public searches of existing ISNI records (similar to the ISNI “search database” function).

Statement from ISNI-IA’s Executive Director, Tim Devenport:

“We look forward to the positive impact these initiatives will have on the publishing industry and the broader media landscape. We are delighted to cooperate with MVB in delivering these enhancements to the global community of ISNI users. Their new service, open to the general public worldwide and across all sectors represented by the ISNI standard, is a timely addition that will be greatly appreciated by ISNI users.”

Benefits of ISNI

The International Standard Name Identifier (ISNI) helps streamline processes related to books, digital products and other media by eliminating name-related confusion in search and discovery – within databases and online stores. It also opens the door to innovative services, such as automated updates on new publications by specific authors. MVB advocates for the widespread use of ISNI to improve research and the marketing of media.

About the International Standard Name Identifier (ISNI):

ISNI is the ISO-certified, global standard number for identifying the millions of contributors to creative works and those active in their distribution, including researchers, inventors, writers, artists, visual creators, performers, producers, publishers, aggregators, and more. As ISO 27729, it is part of a family of international standard identifiers that also includes identifiers of works, recordings, products, and rights holders in all repertoires, e.g. DOI, ISAN, ISBN, ISRC, ISSN, and ISWC.

ISNIs can also act as linking or bridge identifiers in cases where several identification schemas exist, thus enabling cross-walks and correlation between the different schemas.

About the ISNI International Agency (ISNI-IA):

The ISNI-IA is the Registration Authority for the International Standard Name Identifier (ISNI) and is charged by ISO with governing, promulgating and maintaining the use of ISNIs worldwide.

ISNI’s mission is to assign to the public name(s) or persona(s) of individuals – as well as organizations involved in the production and/or distribution of creative works – persistent unique identifying numbers in order to resolve the problem of name ambiguity in search and discovery; and to diffuse each assigned ISNI across all repertoires in the global supply chain so that every published work can be unambiguously attributed to its creator(s) wherever that work is described.
